Ease eyestrain with a blue light filter

Purpose

Reduce eyestrain using the Redshift blue light filter and configure it to suit your needs.

Background

Blue light filters have become a very popular way to limit eyestrain and maintain circadian rhythms. Since March 2020 Redshift is installed by default and new users are created with the widget enabled in the system tray.

Option 1: Enable in system tray

  1. Unlock widgets
  2. Add Widget to panel
  3. Reposition the widget
  4. Configure Redshift
  5. Toggle Redshift

Option 1: Enable in system tray

This video by Eric Adams shows how to enable the Redshift filter in the system tray. If you use this method we do not recommend also adding a widget to the panel to avoid confusion.

Since late April 2020 all new Focus systems are shipped with this configuration.

Option 2: Add a widget to the panel

2.1 Unlock widgets

Right-click on the panel and select Unlock Widgets.

2.2 Add Widget to panel

Right click and select Add Widgets…

Search for Redshift in the Widget panel (shown here at left).

Double-click on the widget to add to the panel. A (1) will appear in the panel to indicate success.

2.3. Reposition the widget

The widget as appended to the end of the panel — in this case, at the bottom right corner.

Find the widget

Right click on the panel and select Panel Settings…

Reposition the widget

Grab and drag the widget to the desired location.

Right click on the widget to configure.

Geohints generally works well.

2.5 Toggle Redshift

Click on the widget to toggle Redshift on and off.

Right-click on the desktop to Lock widgets again.
